New Gauteng Disc Golf Champion crowned at Inanda Country Base

KYALAMI – The inaugural Gauteng Disc Golf Open was held at Inanda Country Base over the weekend on July 31 and August 1, with 18 participants gunning for the champion title to be theirs.

The inaugural Gauteng Disc Golf Open was held at Inanda Country Base over the weekend of July 31 with 18 participants gunning for the championship title.

According to Bart Meulenbeld, chairman of Disc Golf South Africa, the event consisted of two rounds of disc golf on the new, extremely tough 21-hole Inanda main disc golf course layout.

“After 42 holes of high-quality play, two players – Devin Norman and local Kyalami resident Alex Meulenbeld – were tied on a score of 8-under par and a sudden death play-off was needed to determine the ultimate winner.

“The 3rd play-off hole proved to be the decider as Alex went for, but narrowly missed, his putt. This allowed Norman to lay up close to the hole and, when [Alex] Meulenbeld was not able to make his tricky return putt, a simple tap-in by Norman into the basket was enough to secure the championship,” said Bart.

He added that third place went to Brad Smith, a former South African disc golf champion, on a total score of 1-over par. “The standard of play was excellent throughout, with several players improving on their personal bests. Disc golf is one of the world’s fastest growing outdoor sports and can be played from about age 10 upwards.”

He concluded, “The rules are similar to those of regular golf but instead of a golf club and balls, special flying discs, similar to frisbees, are used with the target being a metal chained ‘basket’.

“Being played in the open with natural social distancing, the sport is ideally suited for the Covid-19 pandemic.”
