SPCA pleads against the abandoning of animals

IVORY PARK – This after the society attended to a call from a female passerby on 28 April who said she had spotted a dog tied to a tree lying in the river in Ivory Park Extension 7.

Midrand SPCA has pleaded with community members to not abandon their animals.

This after the society attended to a call from a female passerby on 28 April who said she had spotted a dog tied to a tree lying in a river in Ivory Park.

General manager of the Midrand SPCA, inspector Pamela Pretorius said on the morning the call was received, both their inspectors were already out attending to calls. Pretorius and kennel assistant Melusi Mndadweni went to the location to find the animal.

Pretorius added that they searched the riverbanks and found a dog in the water that had sadly already died. She phoned the woman to ask if the dead dog was the same animal she had seen but the woman confirmed that it was not the dog she had spotted.

“We continued to scour the riverbank, asking people if they had spotted the dog and finally got a lead. We looked down the bridge and to our horror saw a black-looking dog tied up and in the river,” Pretorius added.

She added that a bystander, Sibusiso Dube became their hero of the day as he immediately assisted them. “Dube jumped down and waded through the water while we guided him from above. He reached the dog and established that it was weak but still alive.

“We rushed the dog back to the society to see if we could save him, but sadly upon return the dog passed away,” said Pretorius.

Pretorius added that she and her team were saddened by the discovery of the two dogs. “There is simply no excuse to abandon or dump unwanted animals. We urge the public to please rather contact our society if you are unable to afford your animals, we do not charge to take in any animal. To allow any animal to suffer in this manner is absolutely unnecessary and inhumane.

“Although we could not save this dog’s life, we take comfort in knowing that its last hours were spent knowing love and affection from our staff.”
