One suspect arrested and two at large following shooting incident in Crowthorne

CROWTHORNE – The Midrand police are currently investigating a shooting incident that stemmed from the alleged tampering of batteries at a cell phone tower in Crowthorne on 24 March.

The Midrand police arrested one suspect allegedly involved in tampering at a cell phone tower and a shooting incident that followed.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Constable Elliot Mabulane said, “The incident occurred on the corner of Neptune Avenue and Walton Road in the Whisken [Avenue] area where three suspects, one armed, attempted to steal the batteries at the cell phone towers.”

He added that local law enforcement was notified about the tampering at the cell phone towers and they responded. “One of the members who responded was part of the CPF [Community Policing Forum]  whereupon arrival shots were fired.”

The shot that was fired at the CPF member went through their windscreen and hit the headrest in the front seat.

The police returned fire and hit the armed suspect in the upper body and the suspect was arrested. No law enforcement members were injured in the shooting. He added that the arrested suspect was taken to the nearest hospital and is currently in police custody.

Mabulane said that the two other suspects, who are believed to be armed, are still large. The police recovered the suspect’s vehicle at the scene and found that it had been linked to a hijacking in the North West province. The incident is still under investigation.
