Plans for service delivery

MIDRAND – Region A manager, Victoria Rammala said that the increased revenue protection operations will continue to be deployed to end electricity theft.

The City of Johannesburg held a community-based planning meeting on 27 February to discuss challenges, improvements and long-term service delivery plans for wards 93, 106, 112 and 132.

The meeting, held virtually and led by the office of the Johannesburg Speaker Nonceba Molwele, was focused on providing a clear presentation on all issues concerning Region A.

Region A acting regional manager Victoria Rammala discussed challenges faced by the Johannesburg Roads Agency such as deteriorating gravel roads, and insufficient and non-existing storm water infrastructure. She said their proposed long-term plans were to upgrade gravel roads and reconstruct the roads where required among other plans.

Rammala further discussed the issues faced by City Power in the cluster. She said illegal connections which resulted in electricity theft were a huge challenge resulting in continuous power failures and street light failures.

“Currently City Power has been removing illegal connections and doing spotting and repairs, reinstating supply when reported and also doing ongoing maintenance.

“It is proposed that reinstated supply should continue in a more robust manner. Projects should also be put in place to replace aging infrastructure, removal of illegal connections, and increased revenue protection operations should be deployed.”

She concluded that the prosecution of the perpetrators could be a long-term solution.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe raised concerns about the electricity supply in the area. Deppe said insufficient electricity and substations which were over-capacitated in her ward were a huge problem.

Deppe added that they have been waiting for a substation to be built in Waterfall but there had been no progress. She said this process had begun but was then halted, and added these concerns could be addressed if plans were fast-tracked by the provincial government.
