Kids keen to get active

NOORDWYK – The Christ Church Preparatory School and College senior netball players introduced the game to their younger learners.

The Christ Church College netball team introduced the game to the school’s preparatory grades 1 to 4 learners.

Spokesperson for the school Dawn Schmitz said that the event was organised by netball captain Ofentse Molokoane, who received assistance from the teaching staff. She said, “The college pupils put on a demonstration to the younger pupils, allowing them to see the game played first hand from the older and experienced pupils.”

Schmitz said, “To start off, the team went through their warm-up drills and stretches. This was followed by an intense match between the blue and white teams. The prep school pupils got to experience this fast-paced sport from the side-lines, cheering and learning as they observed.

“Next up, the prep pupils tried their hand at shooting goals, while the college team took a small break during half-time of their match. Led by a representative of the Gauteng indoor netball team, Elmarie Sunguti, the blue team won the game. The score was 6–2.”

With the younger learners excited and ready, they were led onto the court to try some of the warm-up drills for themselves. Under the supervision of the college learners and netball coaches, they tried jumps, twists and turns, which are necessary to attain the agility required for the sport. “The college pupils split into blue and white teams once again for the next drill. The one team lined up attempted to shoot a goal, and the other team ran a lap around the court one at a time. Each time the shooting team missed, the other team were free to run as far as they could until there was a ball put through the hoop.

“At this point they had to stop and wait for the last person to run. The team that finished running or shooting goals first, was the winner. The blue team was the winner.”
