ICYMI: Midrand SPCA appeals for food for rescued goat

MIDRAND – The SPCA appeals for assistance from the public to keep paying their bills during lockdown.

The Midrand SPCA received a call on 7 May concerning a distressed goat spotted on the riverbank of the Jukskei River.

Midrand SPCA general manager Pam Pretorius said that it was suspected that the goat was left behind following a ritual ceremony that had taken place at the river.

Pretorius said that upon arrival at the scene, they found a tiny goat in distress. “The goat was terrified and emaciated and our team rushed the goat off to Dr [Edward] Evans from Grand Central Veterinary Clinic to see if she could be saved,” said Pretorius.

Fortunately, although the goat was underweight, Pretorius is confident that she will pull through with some proper food, love and care.

The SPCA appealed to community members to help feed this goat through donating money or growth meal, vegetables and fruit.

Pretorius also expressed concern regarding the SPCA’s income in the months ahead. “We cannot make any form of income through fundraisers or adoptions. We still have to pay rent, staff and electricity, amongst other things.”

She said her greatest concern is the plight of abused animals, which the Midrand SPCA assists on a daily basis. “We need to keep our doors open,” she said, appealing for local residents to assist them in any way possible.

The SPCA is also in need of a weed eater since their last one was stolen just before lockdown commenced.
