Department blitz in Ivory Park assists community

IVORY PARK – Residents awarded a chance to participate in a service delivery blitz to gain more knowledge about various issues they face.

Ivory Park Ext 4 residents were given a chance by the Department of Social Development to get assistance on employment, household guidance and tertiary knowledge.

The aim of the event on 12 March was to help everyone in the community get relevant information and referral sectors that can assist with skills development and additional information they may need.

Noni Makena committee development practitioner and supervisor of the event said their job is to help unemployed youth and those who need additional skills in any department find relevant information on how to go about it. “We give poverty alleviation programmes, skills development to the youth and food parcels to those who are in need. We have different NPOs that render different services for the youth to sustain themselves.”

She added that they work with the councillors to help them identify various issues before taking action. “Through councillors we do community profiling to identify sets of challenges they face and from there we approach various departments to come and assist the community.”

Ishamel Sephiri from Riendzo Development Organisation said their organisation aims to close the gap of unemployment in the community by offering various skills. “Our focus is based on technology, we offer computer, business and finance skills. We also promote women to dwell more into technology and we also offer Unisa students free internet access to do research and submit their assignments in time.”

Various departments including South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), Home Affairs, Department of Labour and the South African Police Service participated in the blitz to ensure that residents received needed assistance to make informed decisions.
