Big goals for the Midrand Cricket Club

MIDRAND – The Midrand Cricket Club promo side is looking forward to a bright future.

As the cricket season comes to a close, the Midrand Cricket Club promo team is looking forward to more growth.

The promo side was formed two years ago with this year being their third season playing in the Easterns Cricket Union. Their first season in 2018 saw the side finish sixth and in their second season, they finished third.

Captain Molope Molope said, “I think it was a culture shock because we are traditionally a social club but coming into the league we realised that we have to compete. It really got us asking whether we wanted to compete or not. We decided that we wanted to compete this year.

“The guys have played competitive cricket before so they knew they didn’t want to be defeated like this.”

He added that the team was made up of players with families and full-time jobs and commitment was an issue but they soon consolidated and the players became much more disciplined and committed to the cause.

They opened this season with a loss against Germiston Cricket Club which was followed by a string of wins to place them on top of the table with two games to go in the season.

With the team on top of the log and positioned to win the league, it would be a massive benefit to the club and its future as they would possibly be promoted to the premier league. Molope said it would give the club the chance to attain sponsorship and also attract younger players to join the club.

“If promo wins it would be a really big thing for the club and a very big thing for Midrand to have a premier league club in the Easterns Union. It will give youngsters the opportunity to realise that there’s a premier league club that they can join.

“Midrand Cricket Club was a family-centered club before we decided to become more competitive… As we move forward we want to become a young development club for kids in Midrand and Tembisa.”

He added that club cricket was still very important. “Unlike the franchise sides, it does really build players and gives them a thick skin because it’s so tough. I think it’s important for us to place emphasis on these clubs’ structures… It’s where all the old greats came from.”
