Kyalami residents show their support for Cansa Shavathon

KYALAMI – St Peter's College hosted a successful Shavathon event at Kyalami Corner.

Kyalami community members came out to show their support for Cansa at Kyalami Corner shopping centre as learners from St Peter’s College hosted a Shavathon on 29 February and 1 March.

Learners from grades 8 to 11 got together and engaged with the shoppers offering to shave or spray their heads to raise much-needed funds and awareness for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Event manager Susan Plumb said the St Peter’s College involvement came together with some of the learners fulfilling their hours for their community service hours. The organisers and learners found time around sporting and school engagements to come together and host the event.

Susan added, “We’ve had a lot of good response from the Grade 8 and 9 students. We want the kids to gain awareness as much as raising funds. A lot of people come out to cut their hair because they have a story to tell. It creates empathy in the students who chat and learn from the people that come through and hear stories first hand.”

She said that the event saw an amazing amount of shoppers donating large amounts. They also received a lot of assistance from the stores at Kyalami Corner such as lunches from Mugg n Bean and Mochachos.

Grade 10 learner at St Peter’s College Reece Johnson said, “My gran had breast cancer, so helping Cansa meant a lot to me.”

Grade 11 David Plumb said, “You learn more about the statistics surrounding cancer and how many people suffer from it… The event helped us bond and learn more about our strengths when it comes from working together. Some of us found out that we are more comfortable approaching people for donations while others are better at cutting or spraying hair.”
