Couple arrested for allegedly dealing with housebreaking suspect themselves

IVORY PARK – A couple from Ivory Park has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a housebreaking and theft suspect.

Police arrested a couple who allegedly beat a man to death suspected of breaking into their home and stealing items.

According to the Ivory Park Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane, during the police’s investigation, it was found that the husband and wife opened a case of housebreaking and theft after their house was broken into and items were stolen. “The couple then went out to find the suspect themselves. During the course of their investigations, they then managed to find some of the stolen items but still pursued their investigation to find the suspect.

“The suspect was hunted down and taken to an address where he was assaulted until he became unconscious and was thereafter dumped on the streets.”

Matimulane added that late in the evening the family of the deceased was informed that their son was seen on the streets. They found him lying naked in the streets and arranged for him to be taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. “The couple was taken into police custody following a gathering of witness statements and the kind of evidence the police were able to gather at the scene. Some of the tools strongly believed to have been used during the assault have been confiscated by the police and will be used as part of the evidence.”

The station commander, Brigadier David Mbongeni Dlhomo expressed his concern about how the couple handled the situation. “It was not necessary, such incidents should have no place in our society as we should all be governed by the rule of law.

“The couple did well by opening a case when their property was stolen but should have continued to work with us after their property was recovered, filling us in about the circumstances under which it was recovered. This death and the accompanying pains for families involved would not have happened,” said Ngcobo.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on 25 February to face a charge of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
