An organisation based in Ivory Park aims to make a difference by donating books
IVORY PARK – NGO aims to provide educational equipment for learners who are passionate about reading.
The Umzekelelo Community Development Organisation is a non-government organisation (NGO) that was established in 2017 by a group of people who decided to bring about change by catering for people who are from disadvantaged homes.
Based in Ivory Park Ext 2, the organisation is involved in various projects. They recently created a new campaign called the ‘Donate A Book Drive’ which promotes reading and gaining more knowledge through books.
Chairperson of the campaign, Fortune Shabangu said they started the campaign because they believe that it will help children who are struggling with reading to get help. “I did not finish school, I dropped out in Grade 8 because I did not get the required attention to help me stay focused in my academics. I don’t want to see that happening to other children.”
He added that he is using his story to help children. “I wish to help children stay in school for the sake of survival because without education life is very hectic. I believe that my story will inspire learners to get assistance and do well for themselves.”
The organisation also has other projects such as their clothing drive and sanitary towel drive. The campaign has been doing well as people are showing interest by donating needed materials.
He added that from beginning of March he wants to start doing book reviews to further assist children with their reading and comprehension skills.
Shabangu said, although the organisation has been doing well, they still face some challenges. They do not have any storage space to keep their donations and they do not have any sponsors either.
