Star dancer gives back to the Midrand community

MIDRAND – M. E Dance Academy working passionately to groom children to become star dancers.

A Midrand dancer aims to give back to the community by imparting her talent on the young.

Since becoming a dancer at the age of five, Meghan Erasmus, founder of M. E Dance Academy, said she felt compelled to give children a platform that allows them to express themselves through dance and take them overseas for competitions, while also making performers out of them so their families and the community can watch their growth.

When explaining her journey as to why she thought she needed to give back, Erasmus said, “I have been a dancer all my life, I trained since the age of five till about 15 which was when I took a break to focus on my studies.

“At age 18, I decided to dance professionally. Mind you, at that time I never saw myself doing dance professionally.

“Through my dance teacher at the time, I was auditioned for an African contemporary dance company called Jazzart, in CapeTown, which was when I was discovered by prominent television producer, Mfundi Vundla and through that opportunity, I was able to become one of the lead dancers for the old television show Backstage to which I then moved to Johannesburg.”

Erasmus established the academy in 2017, with only three students. She added that with her knowledge and experience she only sees it fit for her to give back by grooming young talent to become good dancers and possibly even professional dancers.

“What makes M. E Dance Academy different is my experience as a dancer, dance has affected my life in a positive light because I was honing in on my passion and now I want to take my knowledge, skill and experience and thread them into my dance students.

“I am the teacher at the academy, and we focus on jazz, ballet, contemporary, hip-hop and African styles and we take kids from as young as three years old until 18.”

She added, “We do also cater for adults, there are dance fitness classes, and the reason I love those classes is because it gives me a chance to dance while keeping fit.”

Classes are on Saturdays from 8.30 am until 2pm and Monday at 5 to7 pm at the AFM Impact Christian Centre, Midrand.

Erasmus concluded, “The reason I would suggest people come or kids rather is because I speak to the kids at their level, and in the now, we make it quite a fun atmosphere but also still being grounded to the discipline of dance.
