Two suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and kidnapping by the Johannesburg Flying Squad in Midrand on 24 January.
Flying Squad spokesperson, senior personnel officer Raymond Sambo, said that squad members were on patrol duty when they noticed a suspicious white Nissan Almera with three occupants in it. Two of the occupants were wearing Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department uniforms.
“The vehicle registration was checked and it was discovered that they were using a false number plate. When the suspects saw the police, they sped away and a chase ensued were they collided with the pavement at the corner of Republic Road and Olifantsfontein Road in Midrand.
“The suspects were immediately arrested which was when the third occupant reported to the officers that he was stopped by the suspects wearing EMPD uniform before hijacking him of his truck carrying a load of beetroots and carrots at Brits in the North West Province.”
Sambo added that two nine-millimetre firearms and ammunition were recovered with their Norinco and Z88 (the companies which manufactured the weapons) with numbers filed off. The suspects were detained at the Olifantsfontein Police Station on charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, a robbed vehicle and kidnapping.
“Investigations are taking place to trace the cargo and truck. Members of the public are urged to continue to work with the police by reporting crime and any suspicious persons and activities.
