Summerhill Preparatory School hosts a heartfelt memorial for learner who tragically passed away in December

NOORDWYK – Summerhill Preparatory School and College paid tribute to their former head boy Azola Koloki who passed away in December last year.


Summerhill Preparatory School and College hosted a memorial to celebrate their late head boy Azola Koloki who passed away in December.

The school’s student body, teachers and members of Azola’s family came together to celebrate his memory at the memorial. Azola was one of the school’s top-performing learners in their recently released matric results.

Principal of the school Vashni Chetty said, “He did pass away under very tragic circumstances so a lot of the students didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. The funeral was in the Eastern Cape so many people were unable to pay their respects. So we wanted to bring some sort of closure.”

She added that the memorial gave the school an opportunity to honour his life. “There was a lot of anger among us because it was not what he deserved. He had such an incredible future and a lot of us feel like that was snatched away.”

Chetty added that Azola had incredible qualities that he added to school including leadership and his go-getter attitude that reflected on everyone at the school.

At the memorial, members of his family and some of his best friends shared their memories of him. One friend Matthew Naidoo said, “Besides his hard work and academics he was a great thinker and gave some great advice.”

Another friend Tokollo Letsoalo said Azola was the portrait of success. He added, “Azola is everything that I aspire to be and I feel blessed to call him my brother.”

The memorial was a heartfelt tribute to Azola Koloki with his teachers and principal sharing his success and heartwarming stories about him and everything he added to the school.
