Locals take part in the Kleenward 80 initiative in Tembisa

TEMBISA – Ward 80 came together with various City of Joburg entities for a community clean-up.

The launch of the Kleenaward80 campaign was hosted with a community clean-up on 18 January.

Ward 80 councillor Makgoba Pagadi said that the clean-up focused on the largest collections of waste that had accumulated following repeated complaints from the local community of dumping in the area.

The clean-up saw members of the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum), Pikitup and the Department of Environmental Health assist the community in cleaning the area while giving important educational information to create awareness about the health risk.

Crum inspector for Ward 80 Banele Yabo said that the initiative’s main focus was to bring the community together in order to work alongside the City of Johannesburg entities. “We noticed that much the dumping in the area was done by the community and we wanted to stress the health concerns that this creates.

“Among the health issues was obviously the smell that the built-up created. But also, the area hosts a number of communal taps with the water sometimes running through the dumping sites.”

Councillor Pagadi said, “The message we wanted to send to the community is to show them that they should not litter everywhere and they should clean the area rather than relying on government to clean it for them.”

He added that they would like to encourage the community members to consistently come out and assist in rehabilitating their area.
