Beaulieu College learners show their artistic side

MIDRAND – Beaulieu College learners display their artwork which took months to create.

Beaulieu College held its annual Art Exhibition on 26 November to show off pieces of artwork done by Grade 12s.

Parents, friends of the learners and parents to alumni learners were welcomed to view the work of the talented learners which took almost a year to complete.

Visual arts teacher, Petri de Klerk gave a short introduction about art and life before showing the learners’ work. “Art needs more explanation, we did put the rationale but viewers do not like to read, hence, I gave overviews so they can understand what is going on. I tell them about the topics and specific interesting things with regards to the artwork.

“At the end of each Grade 11 each year, I give the learners topics for the new year. This year’s matric learners got journals so they could immediately start developing their topics, which was a process. The process included brainstorming, selecting or getting other artists contexts, knowledge and research.”

De Klerk said the learners had to finish by the end of the first term, so the work could be moderated at the beginning of the second term. “When it comes to inspiring the learners there are different ways because what tickles the one learner bores the other. Therefore, it depends on how well you know them, the jokes you share and what they have used in the past or they have told you.

“But basically you have to know each learner because this is an individual thing. Unlike maths where you solve a problem the same way, art needs a completely different approach.”

De Klerk explained that each learner had to find a solution to a problem which is valid, had to meet the set criteria, be responsible, have factual content, worthwhile in a technical way and, lastly, have good composition, uniqueness and originality.

“I think the learners have worked hard, you get talented people who do not work hard, get normal people who work hard, and those who are talented and work hard. But I must commend my learners, they worked hard.”
