Discovery 947 Ride Joburg road closures

JOBURG – The popular Discovery 947 cycle challenge will affect many roads around your area, the race takes place on Sunday, 17 November.


It is that time of year again where thousands of cyclist, not just from Joburg but from across the country, take to the streets on Sunday, 17 November for the 23rd edition of the city’s most well-known cycle challenge. 

This year’s edition will use the traditional 94.7km route but there is also a new feature, a 40km short ride.

During race day, the following roads will be affected and partially closed:

  • Erling Road and Lynx Road to Steyn City in Fourways to Midrand from 4.30am–10.35am
  • Cedar Road and Gateside Avenue to R114, Fourways from 4.30am–11.05am
  • Malibongwe Drive and R114 (Old Lion Park) to Witkoppen Road, Randburg from  4.30am–11.40am
  • Witkoppen Road and Malibongwe Drive to Douglas Road from 4.30am–12pm
  • Grosvenor Road and Douglas Road to Moray Drive from 5am–12.15pm
  • Cumberland Avenue and Moray Drive to Homestead Avenue, Bryanston from 5.10am–12.30pm
  • Bram Fischer Drive and Homestead Avenue to Jan Smuts Avenue from 5.15am–12.35pm
  • Bertha Road and Empire Road to Nelson Mandela Bridge from 5.30am–1.30pm
  • Carr Street and Ntemi Piliso Street to Miriam Makeba Road from 5.30–1.30pm
  • M1 South and Buccleuch Interchange to M2 spilt from 4.30am – 2.35pm
  • Woodmead Drive and M1 South to Maxwell Drive from 6am – 2.50pm
  • R55 and Summit Road to Maxwell Drive, Midrand from 6am– 4pm
  • Mnandi Road and Summit Road to Riversand Road from 6.30am – 4.30pm
  • Riversands Boulevard and Mnandi Road to Erling Road, Diesploot will be closed, won’t be opened to the public for the day.
