Gymnasts stun in national competition

MIDRAND – 16 learners from the Midrand Primary School took part in the National Gymnastics Games in Cape Town.

Sixteen gymnasts from the Midrand Primary School went to Cape Town on 25 September to take part in the National Gymnastics Games at the University of Cape Town.

Learners from the school shared their thoughts from their experience. Olerato Kgonothi represented the school in the Level 4 team of tumbling gymnastics and placed fourth in her division. She said, “I learned that there is always more room to do better, I was amazed that there were different types of gymnastics like acrobatic, trampoline an not just tumbling gymnastics.

Mukona Thovhakale who represented the Level 5 team and finished in fifth position. She added that she had fun too, “I played until I was tired, then I had to shower after that I relaxed for the next day of competitions.

“What amazed me was seeing other children compete and to see how Artistic Gymnastics looks like, but most importantly I learned a very valuable lesson, that it is not all about winning but also having fun. I was able to make friends and enjoy nice food.”

Tlhonolofatso Sediba who represented the Level 6 team came in 16th position. She said, “It was really fun, I learned that I must be confident.”

Tlhonolofatso added that she was amazed by the people, and just having fun and enjoying the activities, which she was not used to. “I was exposed to so much that at the moment I want to change how I do my routine because the way I am doing it now can be improved a bit better.”

The learners were accompanied by the school’s sports administrator, Fisokuhle Skhosana who said, “We have a lot of potential, our kids have the calibre to go and perform at the highest of highest levels, but also, one of the things we came back with is that there still is lot of work to be done.

“The kids still need to grow mentally which is one of the things we identified, that mental-wise, our kids fall short, just a tight bit compared to the other competitors. So we will sit and work on that.”

The Midrand Primary School gymnastics coach, Lettah Stokes said she was inspired to enter the learners into National Championships. “I have been there and I wanted them to experience what it is like to compete at a national level and just for them to learn and get used to such environments, so they see what they can accomplish through hard work.

“I feel overwhelmed and happy for our school to accomplish such.”
