Court finds man guilty of 2016 murder

IVORY PARK – Man sentenced to 28 years in total after the murder of his colleague back in 2016.

An Ivory Park taxi guard was found guilty and sentenced to a total of 28 years by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg for the murder of his colleague back in 2016.

According to the Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane, Sabelo Foreman Sithole (36) got into an argument with his colleague Thobelani Bongo Mchunu, in Ext 2 of Ivory Park.

The two men’s disagreement ended up in the fatal shooting of Mchunu.

Matimulane explained, “Immediately after the incident, Sithole fled to KwaZulu-Natal where he hails from. After two full years of looking for him, the investigating officer, Detective Constable Edmond Lebopo, then learnt of his whereabouts.

“The suspect was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and brought to Tembisa for trial but due to the nature of matter the case had to be referred to the high court.”

Matimulane said Sithole was sentenced to 18 years for murder, five years for attempted murder and five years for illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm. All sentences are expected to run concurrently. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Ivory Park Police Station Commander Brigadier David Ngcobo said, “However long it took for Sithole to be brought to book, we are glad that his evil past has finally caught up with him, and that the Mchunu family may derive comfort from this sentencing.

“We as the management of the Ivory Park SAPS are proud of Detective Lebopo’s track record of investigating murders.”
