Mayor Mashaba to welcome 450 insourced cleaners as part of Women’s Month celebration

JOHANNESBURG – Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba to welcome insourced cleaners.

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba together with the Group Corporate and Shared Services Ntombi Khumalo will continue the insourcing programme by welcoming 450 cleaners to be insourced by the City of Johannesburg.

“This marks the start of the insourcing of a total of 1 879 cleaners, most of which are women who will benefit greatly from employee benefits like pension, medical aid, and increased take-home salary – ending a reliance on tenderpreneurs who have exploited workers for years,” said Mashaba.

“The empowerment of women is a particularly momentous achievement as we celebrate Women’s Month in our country.”

The mayor said the insourcing programme intends to bring back dignity to the workers who have been exploited for decades.

“These cleaners previously earned R3 000 per month, while the City paid R6 500 per cleaner to the outsourced companies they worked for. These cleaners will now be able to take home over R4 000 a month after deductions of a salary of around R5 600 per month.”

He added that the insourcing of cleaners follows the insourcing of the security guards which has brought dignity to close to 4 000 families.
