Rabie Ridge police close illegal liquor outlets

MIDRAND – Police closed illegal liquor outlets in Rabie Ridge and poured alcohol down the drain as a means to tackle alcohol abuse in the area.


Rabie Ridge Police Station is currently facing the challenge of youngsters abusing alcohol and other illegal substances in the area.

According to the spokesperson Captain Mofana Masela, there have been cases of sexual abuse of young girls who get raped when they leave taverns at night where legal closing times and age limits are not respected. “The station also has [also seen an increase in arrest cases where] young people [are caught] driving drunk.”

Masela added that a substantial number of minors end up dropping out of school as a result of alcohol abuse.

The Station Commander, Colonel Johanna Ngoma, appeals to the community to assist the police and social workers to address and fight this massive issue.

“This can be achieved over the reductions of illegal substances in the community; it is a serious threat to the future of our children and the whole country.”

As a result, the station has begun its monthly operations to target illegal outlets and shebeens as a means to tackle the issue, having closed several illegal liquor outlets already and disposing of the confiscated liquor.

Masela said their goal is to take charge to control the usage of alcohol in the community. Rabie Ridge police caution residents to drink responsibly.
