Poplar Academy shows off drama talent

CROWTHORNE – Learners at Poplar Academy thrill audiences with outstanding performances on stage.

Poplar Academy recently held its biggest celebration to date for young and talented performers at the school.

A number of drama activities culminated in a show-stopping event as the nursery and primary school treated the audience to a wonderful demonstration of their singing and performing talents. The Grade 5 learners performed Gijima in their colourful T-shirts which they decorated themselves during their art classes.

The talented youngsters performed extracts from Shakespeare’s plays which will be entered into the Annual Shakespeare Festival at the Children’s Theater in Johannesburg on the 15 and 16 May.

Performances were enjoyed from Sven Gaskell who portrayed Shylock from The Merchant of Venice, Indigo Swart in her role of Helena from Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Kian Kumm and Jethro Grant thrilled the audience with their roles as Macbeth and The Appropriations – Macayla Anderson, Abdou Mboob and Vhutali Rasilingwani made wonderful witches.

The school play followed, and this consisted of several extracts which were spontaneously adapted from The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The audience was left with a literal chill down their spines. These actors, having honed their skills with this challenging piece, will participate in the Gauteng Regional Amateur Dramatic Series programme in May.
