A sea of purple-wearing cyclists take to the road for epilepsy

MIDRAND – Purple Day hosted a cycle from Sandton to Tembisa to raise awareness for epilepsy.

Purple Day collaborated with Abuse Ride and Cycle Life SA to raise awareness about epilepsy on 24 March.

Purple Day is a global grassroots event formed with the intention to increase worldwide awareness of epilepsy.

The event was led by non-profit organisation Epilepsy SA, an organisation founded in 2015 by Linda Dias Menezes and Maximillian van Heerden. The special cycle began in Sandton and ended at the Tembisa Self Help Association for the Disabled centre.

Johannesburg Biker Crew Assault Riderz members led the cycle and various Scout troops marshalled the event.

Event organiser Tania van Heerden said, “We had three guest speakers talking about their experience living with epilepsy and the stigma and depression they feel. “We also had an educational first aid demonstration by Gau-Med ambulance service to educate the crowd about epilepsy.

“The important lessons to be learned is a first aid demonstration to educate and enlighten people on a subject so misunderstood – don’t restrain a person having a seizure, don’t place anything in their mouth, don’t run away, stay with them and call an ambulance if you don’t know first aid.”

Van Heerden has also begun a toiletry drive and is calling on the local community to donate items which will benefit Epilepsy SA

Springs, REEA Craighall, Tshimolo Kaalfontein and Bathabaleng Home in Ivory Park. He would appreciate donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, clothes, lotion, shampoo and sanitary pads among others. Anyone willing to donate these products can contact Van Heerden on
