Problem road addressed in Noordwyk

NOORDWYK – A new traffic light on 8th Road in Noordwyk has been installed with the hope of reducing traffic accidents in the area.

The issue of speeding motorists on 8th Road in Noordwyk has been addressed.

This follows a number of traffic incidents in the area including a serious accident that took place in front of Noordwyk Primary School on 9th Road which left a Grade 3 learner seriously injured in February this year.

To address this problem, a traffic light had been installed on the corner of 8th Road and 10th Street on 25 March.

Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin said, “This is in response to a call by residents to address speeding cars who fail to stop at stop signs on this main arterial which serves as the access roads to a number of schools in the area.

“The entrance to Summerhill School is on this corner and there have been countless accidents in this location. I am sure the erection of the traffic light will be a welcome addition.”

Hicklin continued by saying, “What we will still need to monitor is driver behaviour coming down 8th Road from Lever Road.

“Too many cars speed down this road.”

She also added that the erection of the traffic lights and the tarring of the road, including a comprehensive stormwater drainage system, have been included in the City of Johannesburg’s Integrated Development Plan for a number of years.

Regarding the state of 9th Road, Hicklin said the process for tarring the road was still underway.

A contractor had been appointed and the exact date for the work to commence was yet to be finalised.
