Blue Hills come out on top in Athletics meet

MIDRAND – A number of Midrand schools got together to go head-to-head in Athletics.

A selection of 11 high schools in Midrand gathered for their annual cluster athletics meet at Midrand High School.

The event is in its fourth year and was organised by Sagewood College deputy principal Tembu Tete. He said, “This is the event where the Midrand cluster selects its team to participate in the regional athletics meeting. This is an event that all schools look forward to at the beginning of the year.”

The event gave all the athletes in the cluster the opportunity to showcase their talent and compete against each other with the winning school taking home the floating trophy.

The schools that participated included hosts Midrand High School, Noordwyk Secondary School, Curro Midrand Sagewood, Blue Hills College, Allanridge High, Nizamiye Secondary, Glen Austin High, Midland Primary and High, Hope Fountain, Gallagher School and Acts House. “The atmosphere on the stands was proof that we need more opportunities like these to give our children a chance to perform out there. “The government and private sector need to do something when it comes to sports facilities in Midrand as it is a big challenge.

“Our athletes from all schools were focused and thanks to all the coaches and teachers who prepared them because the standard displayed by the athletes does show that there is a bright future for some of these learners in athletics.”

After a day of hefty competition, the defending champions Blue Hills College came in first, followed by Noordwyk Secondary School and Midrand High School in third.

“Even though the focus is not on winning but on participation and doing your best for your school, we had to have a winner at the end of the day… I would like to thank Midrand High for being great hosts, the medical team that worked tirelessly looking after injured learners, all athletes for giving their best on the day, and lastly all the coaches and teachers that spent many a day preparing the learners for this event.”
