MIDRAND – With the canine distemper outbreak Midrand vet urges residents to vaccinate their dogs.

An outbreak of distemper, an airborne disease, has hit Gauteng, and though Midrand SPCA and Midrand Veterinary Hospital have not received any cases they urge residents to get their dogs vaccinated.

Dr Nicola Fyve at the Midrand Veterinary Hospital said that the early symptoms include, but are not limited to, nasal discharge, diarrhoea and coughing.

The diseases is a fatal virus that attacks a dog’s respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems with no cure at the moment. Dr Fyve added that dog owners should keep up to date with the vaccinations which cover distemper.

She said that the Midrand Veterinary Hospital has not received any cases as of yet, but urge dog owners to get their animal vaccinated to avoid infection.

Vice chairperson at the Midrand SPCA Brenda Lucas said, “Animals should be vaccinated regularly. If you have not vaccinated please do so. If you are unable to afford private veterinary care you can come to the SPCA to see if you qualify for a vaccination from us.”
