Plans for Tembisa Hospital nurses department unveiled

TEMBISA- Head of nursing at Tembisa Hospital, Wilfred Mothwane reaffirmed the nurses' commitment to uphold, promote and protect the patient's right charter.

The head of nursing at Tembisa Hospital, Wilfred Mothwane had a good story to tell about his staffs’ performance.

On 24 January, Mothwane and members of the hospital board and executives briefed staff members on the state of the nursing department.

“Colleagues, in 2018 we sustained standards that rated us being a top performing hospital in the province,” said Mothwane.

“We consistently produced results in [the region of] 80 per cent.”

Although the hospital has been subject to much scrutiny by the media, head office, political parties and the community, Mothwane added that through all the challenges that pre-existed before 2017 and last year, the hospital had ‘come a long way’.

The health centre experienced a tough 2018 when several staff members took to the streets over alleged poor management and unfair treatment of workers.

“All managers in public service have a role to play in creating an environment for their staff to become effective in such a way to interact with customers or patients,” said Mothwane.

“In the struggle to transform the public service, old culture has to be changed to ensure that our patients are served properly.”

He reaffirmed the nurses’ commitment to uphold, promote and protect the National Patients’ Rights Charter and said it was important for staff to be motivated, especially when they were under pressure or stressed.

“Today, Florence Nightingale’s legacy remains heartfelt,” added Mothwane.

“But with all the distractions that nurses face day in and day out, it is easy to get lost in our struggles and forget about our mission as modern nurses.”

With all its successes and challenges, the hospital’s management is optimistic that the hospital will achieve its 2019 target.

“The audits have proven that in 2019 with risk management, we are going to aim for higher and better,” concluded Mothwane.

“We are going to aim for the 90s [per cent] and we will not settle for neck and neck with the best, we will settle to be ahead and nothing else.”
