Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club tournament honours young member who passed away
MIDRAND – Local underwater hockey players play their hearts out in memory of a young member who passed away.
Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club held a splashing tournament in honour of one of its young members who passed away in 2016.
The Jacob de Villiers 3×3 Tournament saw underwater hockey players dive into the pool once again for a three-person-per-team tournament on 27 October.
The format is faster and more challenging for the players, said club committee member, Lindeka Moeng.
“It is played with only three players per side as opposed to the usual six, hence the name 3×3,” she explained.
“It is played in a smaller playing field [pool] and since there are fewer players, all players are far more involved in the game.”
Moeng said due to the intensity of the format playing time is reduced to eight minutes per game.
“[This] may appear short, but consider holding your breath for most of this time while playing a vigorous sport underwater.”
She added that the tournament saw 12 teams from the home club compete along with five teams from Pretoria Underwater Hockey Club in more than 40 games.
“We had girls and boys leagues in each of the three age group categories [U13, U15 and U19], including a senior team that challenged the U19 teams.”

- U15 boys: Fearsome Rex
- U15 girls: Triggerfish
- U19 boys: Henk
- U19 girls: Powerpuff Girls
- U13 boys: Flicking Fast
- U13 girls: Goldfish
Moeng said despite the competitiveness of the players, there was great sportsmanship and a vibrant atmosphere prevailed.
She encouraged anyone interested in playing underwater hockey to contact the club and give the sport a try.
