Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi–Malobane has named Ivory Park Police Station as one of the eight underperforming with high murder rates.
Nkosi-Malobane said this after holding a routine performance review meeting on 26 September at Avianto Conference Centre in Muldersdrift with the provincial law enforcement agencies to engage on their quarterly performance.
At the meeting, Nkosi-Malobane raised concerns about the high murder rate which has increased by 3,2 per cent especially in the eight underperforming police stations in the province namely, Dobsonville, Akasia, Krugersdorp, Honeydew, Kagiso, Kempton Park, Ivory Park and Tembisa.
The eight police stations were part of the 40 priority stations which contributed significantly to high crime levels in the province.
“I had a fruitful engagement with the leadership of the law enforcement agencies in the province. While I acknowledge that the crime levels are still unacceptably very high, I am delighted that Gauteng has recorded some improvement in the number of underperforming police stations from 13 to eight police stations,” said Nkosi-Malobane.
Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane said the station was working tirelessly with the community to bring the numbers of crimes down.
He said compared to the previous crime statistics, the station has recorded an overall 11 per cent decrease in murder.
“We are continuously forging a closer working relationship with our communities and other stakeholders such as schools, businesses and the community at large. We aim to encourage as many people as possible, through these structures to inculcate a culture of reporting crime wherever they witness it.
In addition, people are already heeding to the call judging by the number of firearms and suspects arrested in recent days,” said Matimulane, who added that most contact crimes occur after people return from a drinking spree.
“Coming after illegal shebeens by closing and confiscating their stock and ensuring that legal drinking spots stick to the terms of their licence, we believe has somehow contributed to the intervention in the high number of murders in the area.”
