Kwai-Jazz rising within the industry
MIDRAND – Music giant Emmanuel Matsane set to release a new single.
Mjokes, who is better known as Emmanuel Matsane, one of the founders of music giant Kalawa-Jazmee Records, as well as a member of the legendary kwaito group Trompies, will be releasing a single on 14 September, called Abantu.
Matsane (51) has revealed that the music industry is not a kind one and getting promotions on a single plus airwaves is a challenging job which has allegedly suppressed many upcoming musicians.
“My music is a new genre which is a combination of kwaito and jazz called kwai-jazz. A few artists are also now releasing this genre of music,” shared Mjokes.
Matsane obtained a Licentiate Teacher’s Diploma in music at the Madimba Institute of African Music and further studied classical music.
“My passion is music and my life has been a reflection of that. My other colleagues and I founded Jazmee Records in 1995 after we had been working for white-owned music companies and realised it was about time we had record labels that are owned and run by black people – that way we will have a better understanding of the style of music we like and the people we cater for.
“In 1997 we merged with Kalawa which is how Kalawa-Jazmee Records came about. It’s been a journey of highs and lows but music has continued to change the lives of people.”
Matsane has worked with Trompies, Alaska, Mafikizolo and many other legendary groups and musicians throughout his years in the industry as a producer and artist.
