A taxi driver from Kaalfontein has been arrested for perjury after he had opened a false case of hijacking at the Ivory Park Police Station last month.
According to the police, the 32-year-old reported that he was hijacked by unknown people in Tembisa last month where he operates.
Spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane said, “Investigations commenced soon after the case was opened and it emerged that there was no hijacking that took place.
“Following tireless follow-ups the police managed to establish that the information supplied by the suspect differed a lot from the vehicle’s movements on the day of the alleged hijacking.”
The suspect said the taxi driver admitted to having fabricated the hijacking. He had allegedly borrowed the taxi to his friend who never returned it and claimed that it had been stolen.
“He then cooked up a story at the police station and claimed that he had been hijacked, as a result sending the police on a wild goose chase,” Matimulane added.
Station Commander for the Ivory Park Police Station Brigadier David Ngcobo, has condemned the act.
“Opening a false case is a serious offence and the police are going to treat this matter seriously,” Ngcobo said.
“We intend on dealing with it in a way that would send a strong message to the public.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on a charge of perjury.
