Joburg Water promises to solve pump station problems in Midrand

MIDRAND – Joburg Water has highlighted its plans for the Midrand's Acacia Road pump station problems.

Community members have again raised their concerns that the Acacia Road sewer pump station is once more faced with problems and is leaking.

Midrand resident, Janice Spencer Dawson, who lives less than 1km away from the sewer pump station, said the station has been experiencing leaks for a long time due to the fact that it cannot handle the demand and load connected to it.

“At the moment the area is a mess because there was a burst and I have witnessed numerous on-site meetings by Joburg Water but no feedback has been given to residents, myself included, therefore, every time a burst occurs I continue to log the calls,” she added.

Dawson said this entire situation is frustrating because it’s been going on for a while and no permanent solution has been seen.

In the meantime the smell coming from the pump station is unbearable.

Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin said she is aware of the situation and has escalated the matter.

Joburg Water’s communications manager Isaac Dhludhlu said Joburg Water has implemented to resolve the issues at the pump station. “We will monitor progress and respond accordingly.”

According to Dhludhlu, the following has been conducted:

• Electricity supply upgrade has been done

• Two new efficient, smart motors have been delivered and installed. Joburg Water is currently at the final stages of commissioning (programming of the motor control units)

• The water entity is currently investigating the technology of automating the removal of large objects from the inlet screens as compared to current manual removal twice per day

• Joburg Water is in the process of appointing a contractor to upgrade the surface drainage system to divert stormwater away from the pump station.
