Murder convict handed five life sentences may appeal – Midrand police reveal

MIDRAND – A man serving five life sentences at Johannesburg Prison is said to want to appeal his conviction.

It is reported that a former Midrand resident wants to appeal his 2016 conviction of five life sentences handed down by the South Gauteng High Court.

“In 2013 Neo Mokgotsi was charged for the murder of four people, attempted murder of one lady and for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Midrand Police Station’s Detective Sergeant Edward Dikgale.

Mokgotsi lived in Noordwyk before his arrest at the Johannesburg Prison for the five life sentences.

The tragedy started when Mokgotsi and his girlfriend got into an argument which resulted in him assaulting her. Three of his male friends and a female cousin of his girlfriend were present.

“During the assault, one of his friends stepped in and reprimanded him for his actions and which led to an argument between him and the friend who intervened. Later that night six people in one vehicle drove to Mokgotsi’s house in Midrand. They then drove around the area heading to another location.

“While they were in the vehicle the suspect launched a verbal attack on the friend regarding his intervention during the assault. Mokgotsi’s two male friends were biological brothers,” he continued.

Dikgale revealed that during the argument Mokgotsi pulled out a gun and shot everyone in the car. His girlfriend’s cousin tried to make a run for it but was shot in the head.

“Mokgotsi left the scene under the impression that all were dead, but the cousin survived the incident and was to crawl to the road where a security vehicle driving by saw her. The woman is now permanently blind,” concluded Dikgale.
