Sensational soccer at Nizamiye School

MIDRAND – Nizamiye School hosts its first AMS soccer tournament in four years, and it is a huge success.

A whopping 200 soccer players ensured the fields at Nizamiye School were abuzz from morning until afternoon on 5 May.

The name of the occasion was the All Muslim Schools (AMS) Nizamiye Midrand Soccer Tournament and the 20 U11 and U13 teams brought their A-games.

The 7-a-side event was the first hosted at Nizamiye in four years and everyone who attended agreed that it was a tremendous success.

On the field youngsters played fiercely for bragging rights while off the field parents, friends and siblings shouted encouragement from the sidelines.

“The aim of the tournament is to promote soccer,” said the school’s Radia Monga, who acted as the event coordinator. The tournament was hosted in partnership with Youth League Sports Academy.

“Even though the players are small they have been good and played professionally and in good spirit.”

She added that the referees had purposely been strict in enforcing the rules, but the youngsters had been well-mannered despite the level of competitiveness.

In the end, though, there could be only one winner in each division. Both finals were intense and close, each determined by just one goal.

Roshnee Islamic School from Vereeniging managed to pip Lenasia Muslim School 1–0 to become the U11 champions, while Lenasia Muslim School took the U13 trophy after they beat the Azaadville Muslim School 1–0.

AMS regional coordinator, Mems Moosa said the fact that the players had fun was the most important thing.

“The tournament was also very well organised and the schools developed a good rapport in the build-up to it,” he said.

Moosa added that Nizamiye would be welcome to host an AMS tournament again.
