Mob of protesters vandalise police property

MIDRAND – The mob was allegedly protesting over service delivery issues.

Ivory Park Police Station Commander Brigadier David Ngcobo has condemned acts of public violence after a mob attacked and vandalised the local office of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department in Tswelopele.

Ngcobo said police are already hard at work, following all possible leads as he believes that failure to deal decisively with perpetrators will lead to anarchy. “Service delivery issues are being mentioned here and there, but the fact that the perpetrators waited for the cover of the night before embarking on damaging property is telling us that this was pure thuggery.”

Apart from the Metro police office being trampled, perpetrators blocked the roads, damaged the traffic lights, looted shops owned by foreign nationals and vandalised houses of people belonging to those whom they allegedly disagreed with during meetings.

“We appeal to all law-abiding citizens, especially in the affected areas, to come forward with any piece of information that may assist us in bringing the anarchists to justice. We cannot demand service by destroying the already existing service.”
