Attempted murder and sexual assault: A couple’s nightmare attack

MIDRAND – The couple was approached by three armed men while they were sitting in the boyfriend's car.

A woman, who was with her boyfriend, was sexually assaulted after being attacked and hijacked on 21 April at Ebony Park.

The Ivory Park police are investigating a case of attempted murder, hijacking and sexual assault following the incident, which took place in front of the gate at the girlfriend’s house. According to the police, the couple was approached by three armed men while they were sitting in the boyfriend’s car.

It is alleged that the trio instructed the couple to move to the backseat of the vehicle and when the boyfriend apparently refused, he was shot in the leg and subsequently forced into the backseat.

The suspects allegedly drove off with the couple to President Park in Midrand, where they were dumped. However, before they were let go, one of the robbers allegedly threatened the female victim with rape and touched her inappropriately in the process.

The man’s vehicle was taken, and a case of car hijacking, attempted murder and sexual assault was opened at the Ivory Park Police Station.

Ivory Park Police Station commander Brigadier David Ngcobo, has appealed to community members to refrain from parking their vehicles in front of their yards at night and in isolated areas as this makes them easy prey.

“It is clear that there are robbers whose main targets are couples or friends sitting in vehicles. They know that the victims will be concentrated on each other and not aware of what’s coming their way and this makes them easy targets,” said Ngcobo.
