It’s all systems go for the 2019 online schools application as many parents from Midrand and surrounding areas joined thousands across the province to secure a place for their children.
The Department of Education opened the system for Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications on 16 April, recording a whopping 144 124 applications on the first day.
Within the first 10 minutes, the department had received over 10 000 successful applications. “The system is efficient in handling a large volume of applications,” said spokesperson for the Department of Education, Steve Mabona.
While Mabona said there were challenges identified – including incorrect home addresses entered, delays with sending waiting list numbers and web operating systems – some schools in Midrand and Ivory Park reported a smooth process with a positive turnout.
Ivory Park Secondary School had received over 500 applications by 20 April. There has also been a turnout of elderly people and the disabled at the school to confirm the applications.
“We assist and give first preference to the elderly and the disabled. So far, the application system is going very well and we haven’t experienced any glitches,” said principal at Ivory Park Secondary School, Edith Mamosebo.
Halfway House Primary School recorded about 338 applications by 20 April. A total of 79 had already returned with relevant documents to confirm application. “We have not experienced any problems and everything has been going well,” said Halfway House Primary School acting principal, Maureen Selowa.
Midrand High School also reported a smooth application process.
Mabona appealed with parents to first select their municipality, then the town followed by the township or suburb in which they live when putting in their addresses.
“When you follow this procedure, you should not have a problem with finding your street address. We urge parents to make use of Google Chrome, as our site is linked with Google Maps, which makes it easier with regards to the addresses,” added Mabona.
Parents who have no access to the internet or require face-to-face assistance are advised to visit one of the decentralised application centers or a community library. Applications will close on midnight on 28 May.
