New start for Midrand SPCA

MIDRAND – Midrand SPCA has a new general manager with numerous plans and projects to kick start with the support of the community.

Midrand SPCA has a new general manager Pam Pretorius and Midrand Reporter caught up with her to hear more about her plans for the society and the role of the community in those plans.

The Midrand SPCA society welcomed Pretorius on 2 April.

She brings with her 34 years of knowledge and experience having previously worked for the Durban SPCA as a hospital and clinic manager and also worked for the National Council of SPCAs for a number of years.

“I have a great team at the Midrand SPCA because my staff is dedicated to saving animals and always ready to go the extra mile in assisting each and every animal in need in the community,” said Pretorius.

“I joined this particular society because I saw potential in what it could be as well as to educate the community that the SPCA is for every living creature and not only dogs and cats as most people tend to assume.”

One of the projects that Pretorius plans to tackle is the current problem of stray township animals.

“Together with the community leaders, we will run a meeting and awareness campaign in the townships to make people aware that they can bring their unwanted animals or report an animal which has been loitering in the streets for days or eating in rubbish bins.

“Dog chains create a mental damage to the animals because it is frustrated, therefore, dog owners are advised to stay away from chaining their dogs and should rather keep them in a room if they have a function or many guests within their premises, rather than chaining the dog.”

The Midrand SPCA has reached out to the community for funds so that they can carry out their duties properly.

New Midrand SPCA general manager, Pam Pretorius aims to roll out numerous projects to improve the lives of animals.
