#ICYMI: Region A hosts career expo in Ivory Park for matriculants

MIDRAND – The expo is the first to take place in Ivory Park and it is expected to take place annually.

City of Johannesburg Region A kick-started its three-day career expo on 21 February at the Ivory Park North library.

The main aim of the expo was to expose matriculants to the various careers available, to enable them to make the right choice when they complete their high school. Four schools each day visited the expo on two separate sessions.

Umqhele Secondary School, Noordwyk High School, JB Matabane Secondary School and Ivory Park Secondary School were the first schools to attend the career expo.

“In the same breath as the department of education, we feel that the children are now at the peak of their school career and they must make career choices. We feel now is the perfect time to expose them to different careers available in the country,” said manager for library and information services in Region A, Sonny Mothopeng.

The expo is the first to take place in Ivory Park and it is expected to be an annual event. Many companies and organisations offered information on different career opportunities and funding. Shenique Nolan from Noordwyk High School said the expo motivated. “It has inspired us and given us an outlook of what the future could look like if we work hard,” she said.

Mothopeng said the region was planning to pilot the expo due to financial implications.

“Despite the financial implications, the City views the expenses as an investment into the future of the children, even if one child makes the right career choice, we take it as a success,” added Mothopeng.
