Dis-Chem and Nupsaw reach agreement

MIDRAND – Dis-Chem and Nupsaw have reached an agreement following negotiations held after the employee protests.

Dis-Chem and the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (Nupsaw) reached an agreement on 24 January.

Nupsaw-affiliated Dis-Chem employees recently protested at the company’s distribution centre in Midrand due to Nupsaw alleging that their members were not given December bonuses and furthermore that Dis-Chem refuses to grant the union organisational rights.

Solly Malema, the national organiser for Nupsaw, said the two affected parties met at the CCMA for negotiations.

“The company alleged that there should be a 30 per cent members’ threshold amounting to round about 4 000 employees before a union is recognised in the company – this threshold has been negotiated to only 1500 members.”

“The agreement reached is that members will be paid their last year December bonuses before the 5 February,” said Malema.

Nupsaw is said to have reached agreement with Dis-Chem.

Dis-Chem has confirmed the agreement, stating that they have initiated discussions with the affected employees in an effort to arrive at a common understanding of certain issues and agree on a suitable resolution.

According to Dis-Chem, over 10 500 of their employees were awarded bonuses in accordance with the company’s remuneration policy.

Nupsaw-affliated Dis-Chem employees protest over bonuses and union recognition.Furthermore, discussions are continuing with the affected group of employees in an effort for them to return to work, and ensure resolution with regard to the payment of bonuses.
