Alex Caige looks forward to the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge

JOBURG – Radio presenter Alex Caige offers advice for people riding the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge for the first time.

The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge is right around the corner, and 947 Breakfast Club radio presenter Alex Caige met with Caxton Local Media to discuss his preparation for the race.

“I am not ready for the cycle challenge,” he joked, although this is probably not the truth.

Caige, a Fourways Ext 3 resident, will cycle in his fifth 947 Cycle Challenge on 19 November and has been riding for about an hour and a half, two or three times per week in recent months.

Trainers at Cycle Zone in Rosebank have been helping Caige prepare to attain his goal of finishing in about three and a half hours, although Caige vows to take the race easy and enjoy it without putting pressure on himself to finish quickly.

“I have had a lot of work and studies lately so I have not trained as much as I wanted to. But with cycling, you have to set out to enjoy it and I know I will have fun again.”

He said he kept on doing the cycle challenge because he gets to explore the city, and cycling through the Joburg CBD “is pretty special”.

“Fourways is also known as the ‘dark corner’ because of all the traffic. But once the roads are closed and we get to cycle through it without the danger of cars, it will be great fun.”

He highlighted what a thrill it was to see residents come out to support cyclists on the route, especially on the corner of Witkoppen Road and Douglas Drive, at Dunkeld Square and on the M1 between Marlboro Drive and the CBD.

“Cycling gives people an opportunity for people to come and have fun together regardless of their age or race, so my advice for people cycling for the first time is to focus on nothing but enjoying the ride.”
