Dog and cat food urgently needed at Midrand SPCA

Midrand SPCA is desperate for puppy and adult dog food, and cat and kitten pellets. 

The pound’s chairperson Brenda Lucas said, “We are currently taking in between 40 to 50 animals per week.

These animals are either donated due to people being unable to afford to look after their animals, or stray animals as the SPCA is acting on behalf of the City of Johannesburg as the animal pound and therefore all stray animals are also brought to our kennels. The SPCA is the only animal welfare organisation that may not turn an animal away by law.”

She said adoption rates are currently between 20 to 30 animals per month. “Every year the number of animals brought into the SPCA increases. During October to February, we do see an increase in the numbers of animals being brought in. This is mainly due to uncontrolled breeding or the tough economic situation whereby people can no longer afford to look after their animals.”

Tips from Midrand SPCA on making provisions for your animals:

• If you intend on going on holiday, please ensure that your animals have the proper care that they need if they cannot go with you. It is important to ensure that you either have a trustworthy or reputable pet sitter or that you book with a reputable boarding kennel as soon as possible.
• There are a number of SPCA’s that do offer boarding facilities so please contact your nearest SPCA to see which services they offer. It would be a requirement from the boarding kennel facility for your pets to have a full vaccination history, so please ensure that this is done without delay.
• It important that people ensure that their pets have positive identification in the form of a collar and tag, or have a microchip implanted. This is a painless process and will ensure that when a pet is taken to the nearest vet or SPCA, they will be scanned and safely reunited with their owners.

The SPCA receives a number of stray animals during the festive season that have no positive identification and therefore cannot be reunited with their owners who may be on holiday and unaware that their pet has gone missing, said Lucas.
