It’s all about the environment

MIDRAND – Keeping the area clean for everybody.

Recent supplementary local elections at Midrand Primary School saw Kealeboga Mathapelo Masemola emerge as the new Ward 112 Committee Member for the Environment portfolio.

Masemola said she believes that cleanliness is next to godliness. “This is what makes me want to take care of the environment where I stay and in my community. Having children [means it is] my priority to make sure that the community I live in has adequate recreational parks where they can play and have fun – this environment must be safe and have the proper equipment to help stimulate the growth of my children.”

Ward committee members’ roles include monitoring ward-based implementation of City projects and ensuring effective and continuous service delivery as part of a support structure for the council.

Induction meetings ensure that ward committee members learn how to escalate matters, deal with service delivery issues and work with urban inspectors. They would also learn about ward governance to assist in the effective delivery of services.

Humphrey Manamela, regional manager and ward governance, explains the election process.

“I will also encourage the councillor to enforce the no-littering bylaw, especially of companies that leave their rubble on our street corners thus making our streets dirty; and to have an environment day where we will clean our community, especially where some people use the open area as dumping sites, this will also encourage our community to keep our ward as clean as possible.”
