MIDRAND – The Midrand Scouts visited the Midrand SPCA on Mandela Day.

The relatively new 1st Midrand Scout Group decided to support the Midrand SPCA for their Mandela Day initiative.

The Scouts and some parents visited the animal organisation to give back time and love for every year that Madiba dedicated to the struggle.

Scouts South Africa is the biggest youth organisation in the country with more than 190 000 children, youths and adults nationwide and performs many community upliftment programmes in rural areas. Mandela was the patron of Scouts South Africa, and one of the first Nelson Mandela Day events organised by the Scouts was on Robben Island.

This year, the Cubs and Scouts showered the animals with bags of food, love and spent time playing with them.

Brenda Lucas, chairperson of the Midrand SPCA said, “Mandela Day celebrations started early for us when we had the honour of spending Saturday morning 15 July with the 1st Midrand Scout Group. The Scouts and Cubs came to visit the animals at the Midrand SPCA and spoilt the cats and pups with some treats, love and food.

“Inspector Jerry Seemise also took the time to educate and engage with the Cubs and Scouts on animal care and how they could help by reporting cruelty cases to the SPCA.”

Martin Roediger, the Midrand Scout Group leader said, “I am overwhelmed at the time and generosity of the [Scout] group towards the SPCA.”
