A joint police investigation has been launched into the rape of a woman by two men allegedly dressed in Metro police uniform on 5 July.
“The woman was pulled over while travelling on the 14th Avenue off-ramp near Fairland and asked to provide her driver’s licence, after which she was raped by both men at gunpoint,” said Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson, Moses Dlamini confirmed that the case was brought to the attention of Ipid. “However, I cannot qualify or refute the allegations at this stage. We haven’t spoken to the victim herself because she is apparently traumatised – that’s what the family is saying. There’s nothing more I can say until we have interviewed the victim and obtained more information. We will verify the claims once the complainant is available for an interview,” said Dlamini.
Minnaar warned motorists to be on the lookout for certain telltale signs which could help them to avert such situations. “Metro police only make use of unmarked vehicles during special operations. Officially marked vehicles are used for patrol duties.”

If motorists are pulled over by anyone who appears not to be a Metro police officer “they should drive to the nearest police station or petrol station where there are lights and cameras, or contact the nearest police station”.
