Suspects caught hiding in the ceiling of Yarona Shopping Centre

MIDRAND – Two men were caught hiding in the ceiling of a shopping centre following an attempted break-in on 21 June.

Two suspects were arrested after they were caught hiding in the ceiling of Yarona Shopping Centre in Kaalfontein on 21 January after an attempted break-in.

The men aged 23 and 29 were allegedly about to break into the shopping centre when security guards noticed them loitering and called the police in the early hours of that morning. When the police arrived at the shopping centre, the men had already gained entry into the ceiling, in an attempt to break-in.

They were found in possession of screwdrivers, hammers, a side cutter and spanner. “It became clear to the police that the two went to the mall with the sole intention of breaking in and stealing,” said the spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane.

Both suspects live in Kaalfontein. They were charged with attempted business burglary and possession of housebreaking implements and are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon.

Police are investigating whether the suspects may be implicated in housebreaking and burglary cases in the area.

Ivory Park Police Station Commander, Brigadier David Ngcobo has welcomed the arrests and complimented the police for their speedy response. “We intend conducting further investigations to find out if the two men may be connected to some of the crimes taking place within our policing precinct,” he said.
