Warning: Stay away from false “prophets”, say police

MIDRAND – A woman from Ebony Park was duped and robbed by an alleged false prophet who promised to cleanse bad luck from her and help her get a job.

Ivory Park police have sent out a stern warning to the community to be vigilant after a woman was allegedly robbed by a false prophet on 9 June.

According to the police, the 24-year-old woman from Ebony Park was walking to a local spaza when she was approached by a self-acclaimed prophet who introduced himself to her as Daniel. The man apparently began making revelations to her and exchanged cellphone numbers with her for a further consultation the following day.

“The woman said the so-called prophet said he was in a hurry but could meet her the following day for further consultation. She said most of the things the man said were spot-on and that is why she believed him and agreed to meet again,” said a spokesperson for Ivory Park police, Captain Bernard Matimulane.

The following day, on 10 June the woman met with the alleged prophet again who was driving a green Volkswagen Golf with another male, in Ebony Park. She had brought along a laptop and a cellphone and had a meeting with the men in the car.

“The unemployed woman had brought her laptop as instructed by the alleged prophet, who promised to curse away bad luck and help her get a job. She was allegedly given a container to get a sample of urine for a ritual,” added Matimulane.

Upon her return, the car was nowhere to be seen. It had driven away with her cellphone, laptop and cash that was inside the laptop bag. Station Commander for Ivory Park Police Station, Brigadier David Ngcobo warned people against falling for such tricks and said they should report them to the police.

“If you have never asked any person to do a prophecy on you there is no need to receive such unsolicited advice from strangers. We should not be desperate in such a way that we end up meeting strangers in a way that would have negative consequences on our well-being,” warned Ngcobo.

The driver of the car is reportedly dark in complexion, slim and has a gold tooth, while the alleged prophet is light in complexion and has a big scar on his head.

Police are investigating a case of theft and have appealed to anyone with information with regard to the suspects to contact Ivory Park Police on 011 990 9618.
