Community recreation centre gets the green light in Noordwyk Park

MIDRAND – Noordwyk Park will get a facelift after City Parks approved plans to turn it into a multi-purpose community recreation centre.

City Parks has finally approved the proposal of the Refurbish Project Development Organisation (RPDO) to adopt Noordwyk Park with the aim to refurbish it for community, youth and lifestyle projects.

This comes after this youth organisation and Midrand Forum partnered with City Parks to establish the Midrand Multi-Purpose Community Recreation Centre that will be based in Noordwyk Park.

Over the past three years, the organisation had approached Midrand companies to assist with the establishment of the centre but it never came to fruition.

Chief executive officer for the organisation, Mfundo Mthimkhulu, said the partnership with Midrand Forum and City Parks was a ‘godsend’ for residents, especially the youth.

“Besides sports and music, we will establish a learning platform to provide relevant skills and career opportunities for the youth in this area,” said Mthimkhulu.

Director of Midrand Forum and project head for the Midrand Multi-Purpose Community Centre, Al Karaki, added that the vision of the three organisations for the birth of the centre mark a major milestone for Midrand.

“Rapid commercial and housing developments have taken precedence in Midrand with related infrastructure, crime management and traffic taking the strain. We are running out of lifestyle space and we need to reconnect with ourselves, our families and each other,” he said.

The centre will comprise of a multi-purpose sports and community facility including a skateboard park, soccer fields and also basketball and netball courts. It will also have a hall and canteen for meetings, seminars and special indoor events. Even a ‘ninja warrior’ outdoor playground and obstacle course have already been proposed,” he said.
