Innocent lives lost in attempted robbery after suspects poison dogs in Glen Austin

MIDRAND – The branch manager of Midrand SPCA had to endure a scary experience after her dogs were poisoned during an attempted house breakin.

 

Midrand SPCA branch manager, Chantal Rademeyer sadly lost two dogs during an attempted house break-in in Glen Austin, Midrand.

Rademeyer, who lives on a plot with seven cottages, said the attempted break-in took place on 1 June at about 2am. She was woken by a call from her neighbour warning her about strangers on the property.

“My neighbour woke up and started looking around [her cottage] when she heard the dogs barking and found two people attempting to climb into her cottage through the bathroom window. She immediately reached for a nearby bottle and hit one of them on the head, which caused them to flee,” said Rademeyer.

Two others were spotted trying to break into the main house. The exact number of perpetrators is unknown, besides the four who were spotted.

Midrand SPCA branch manager Chantal Rademeyer and her one-year-old Pekingese, Babushka, who is fortunately still alive.

“There are six dogs in the yard. Two of the dogs died and one is still at the Halfway House Vet and three are at home and well. The vet confirmed that the dogs were poisoned.”

Rademeyer said she was disappointed with the conduct of the police and alleged that the police failed to provide her with a case number for the incident.

Midrand police were contacted but were unable to comment on the matter, stating that a case number was needed in order for them to comment. Midrand Reporter will be following this case closely and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
