Community soup kitchen makes a difference and fills little tummies in Ivory Park

MIDRAND — Mpumelelo's soup kitchen in Ivory Park is on the lookout for donations for children in the community.

The colourful structure at the side of the road looks like a normal crechè from far but as you get closer, especially on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, it is nothing like a normal pre-school.

Mpumelelo soup kitchen provides food for more than 140 children from Ivory Park Ext 2 on Tuesdays and Fridays after school.

The founder, Eva Rammutla said she started the soup kitchen after she saw that many children came from disadvantaged families and did not have much food when they returned from school. “Many of these children live with their grandmothers and survive on grant money as some of their parents don’t work.

“It hurt me to see children starving and not having food to eat when they return home from school,” she said.

Rammutla receives food donations from non-government organisations and the local social development department. However, it is not enough for the number of children that grows each day.

“We appeal to the public to donate whatever they can to feed these children. We also ask for donations of old clothes and shoes because some of these children arrive here without shoes or proper clothes.”

Rammutla works with six other women from the community and has recruited local matriculants and graduates to tutor the children on meal days.

“We have decided to utilise our youth to take them out of the streets and away from crime. They help the children with their studies, which helps those who do not have the support at home.”
